Dr. Anthony Zacharias, Orthopedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine physician at  Froedtert South was our guest today. He is married and has 3 children. He said that the term “sports medicine” can be deceiving as you might think it is only for High School/College aged kids, but the injuries that occur with sports can happen to anyone, any age for many reasons.  He has focused his career on trying to restore anatomy vs replace it and has developed techniques to assist him in doing so, reconstructing the labrum (is the attachment site for shoulder ligaments and supports the ball-and-socket joint as well as the rotator cuff tendons and muscles). He does hip arthroscopy to preserve hip joints and relieve pain and discomfort.  He also completed a research study re: depression and pain re: these types of injuries in young adults and found that 71% of those who had major depressive disorders prior to surgery had decreased symptoms and issues re: the depression post-surgery, showing how musculoskeletal pain and depression are related.
